Trademark registration is limited not only by the number of countries in which the mark will be valid, but also by the kinds and types of goods and services it will cover. Goods and services are divided into 45 categories, known as classes. Each class groups together goods or services that are similar or related, e.g. textiles, chemicals or computer services. The official registration fees rise with the number of classes for which the owner applies. Owners usually register their trademark in 2–3 classes.

The classification of goods and services into groups of similar or related classes has been harmonised worldwide by the Nice Agreement on the classification of trademarks.
