Planning a Visa or Residence Application

Moving to another country, whether for work, business, study or family, almost always involves some form of immigration permission. The first step is to identify which type of permission fits your circumstances. Applying under the wrong category is a common reason for refusal.

Typical Requirements

Although the details vary between countries, applications commonly require:

• A valid passport
• Evidence of the purpose of stay, such as an employment contract, business documents or a letter of admission
• Proof of accommodation
• Evidence of sufficient funds
• Health insurance
• Criminal record certificates, often with an apostille and translation
• Photographs that meet official specifications

Documents From Abroad

Many documents must be legalised and translated before they are accepted. Some, such as criminal record certificates, must be recent at the time of application. Coordinating these steps in the right order is essential, as an outdated or incorrectly legalised document may need to be obtained again.
