Types of permanent residence:

  • permanent residence for 5 years (spouse, dependent relative, child, in the interest of the Slovak Republic, stateless person, on grounds deserving special consideration, for certain types of tolerated stay, protected witnesses, at the request of the Slovak Information Service (SIS) or for security reasons);
  • permanent residence for an indefinite period (at least 4 years of permanent residence, child);
  • long-term residence for an indefinite period (permanent residence) for a person who has resided lawfully and continuously in Slovakia for at least 5 years prior to filing the application (regardless of the type of residence, although some types – such as residence for study purposes – count only partially towards this period, or not at all),
  • long-term residence for an indefinite period (permanent residence) for a person who has resided lawfully and continuously for 5 years in an EU member state as an EU Blue Card holder and has lived in Slovakia as a Blue Card holder for at least 2 years before filing the application,
  • long-term residence for an indefinite period (permanent residence) for a person whose long-term residence has lapsed for reasons laid down by law (acquisition of long-term residence in another EU member state, no longer residing in the Slovak Republic).

Preparing a permanent residence application requires the form to be completed correctly and accompanied by all the required supporting documents. Save yourself time and money by turning to specialists who will help you arrange your permanent residence.

Planning Your Path to Permanent Residence in Slovakia

For many foreign nationals, permanent residence is an important milestone. It provides greater security, reduces the need for frequent renewals and offers a stronger basis for building a life in Slovakia. Because there are several types of permanent and long-term residence, each with different conditions, it is worth planning your path well in advance.

Which Route Applies to You?

The route to permanent residence depends on your personal circumstances. Some people qualify because of family ties to Slovak citizens or residents, while others become eligible after a period of continuous lawful residence. Holders of an EU Blue Card may have a specific route available to them. Understanding which category fits your situation helps you prepare the right evidence.

Continuous Residence Matters

Where eligibility depends on a period of residence, it is important that the stay has been lawful and continuous. Long absences from Slovakia may interrupt this period, and certain types of residence may count only in part or not at all. Keeping track of your time in the country and the basis of your stay helps avoid unpleasant surprises when you apply.

Preparing Your Application

  • A completed application form
  • A valid passport
  • Evidence supporting the ground for permanent residence
  • Criminal record certificates, legalised and translated where required
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Evidence of financial means
  • Health insurance

Requirements differ between the types of residence, so the exact list should be confirmed for your case.

Rights and Obligations

Permanent residence brings rights, such as access to the labour market, but also obligations, including keeping your residence card valid and notifying changes. Residence may be lost after a long absence from the country, so check the rules if you plan to spend extended periods abroad.

Towards Citizenship

For some people, permanent residence is a step towards Slovak citizenship, which has its own separate conditions.
