A foreign national who wishes to apply for temporary residence in the Slovak Republic must hold a D visa – a national visa. In other words, temporary residence in the Slovak Republic cannot be applied for on the basis of a C visa (tourist visa). If a foreign national holds only a C visa (tourist visa) or a transit visa, they may apply for temporary residence only at a Slovak embassy or consulate. Exempt from the D visa requirement are persons from countries whose citizens do not need a visa to enter the Slovak Republic – for example Ukraine and Moldova.
A D visa is also granted where a foreign national is over 18 and has been accepted by a language school for Slovak language studies of at least 25 lessons per week. The visa is issued either for 90 days or for the duration of the language course, but no later than 31 July of the calendar year concerned. A visa may further be granted for a stay of more than 3 months, though for no longer than 1 year, where the foreign national is fulfilling obligations of the Slovak Republic arising from international treaties, or where the interests of the Slovak Republic are being protected. A national visa may also be granted, for the time necessary, to a family member of a foreign national or of a person granted asylum or subsidiary protection.

The application for a national visa is submitted to the relevant embassy or consulate. The following must be enclosed with the application:
- a valid travel document
- a colour photograph measuring 3.5 x 3 cm
- proof of health insurance
- a letter stating the purpose of the stay (as the application for residence is filed with the Foreign Police on the basis of the national visa, all relevant supporting documents must be submitted)
The embassy or consulate must decide on the application within 30 days of receiving it.
Once the national visa has been granted, the holder may stay in the Slovak Republic for the entire period for which it was issued. The holder of a valid national visa may also stay in the other member states for up to 3 months within any six-month period. The same conditions apply to the holder of a residence permit, even where the permit was issued by another Schengen member state. It is issued under the same conditions as a Schengen visa. An administrative fee of €33 is payable for the grant of a residence permit. When collecting a residence permit granted in connection with a national visa, the fee is €9.50.
